I haven’t told you about Merlin yet, even
though he has been a member of our family for two years now.
Merlin egy búza terrier, hivatalos nevén soft-coated
wheaten terrier, azaz lágyszőrű búza terrier. Ez egy Magyarországon meglehetősen
ritka ír kutyafajta.
Merlin is a Wheaten Terrier, officially
known as a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier. It is a relatively rare Irish breed
here in Hungary.
– rajtunk kezdve a sort.
His name was the result of several
weeks of negotiations and a good many family councils. I was the one who first
suggested it — my fondness for the Arthurian legends and Celtic mythology in
general was only too happy to seize the opportunity. The main objection was:
“But Merlin is a great big, bearded old wizard, not an adorable little puppy.” Well, he may not be old, but there is no
doubt that he is a wizard, because from the very first moment he has enchanted
everyone he meets — starting with us. And then he went on to conjure light,
warmth and joy into our lives. He is an exceptional member of our family, and
from the very beginning he fitted in naturally and harmoniously with all of us.
Surprisingly, life with him is very easy.
He had been with us for only two weeks when
I ended up in hospital, but fortunately this did not cause any break in our
relationship — especially since the rest of my family managed to smuggle him
into the hospital garden along with them to see me. As one of our friends put it after asking
what we had named the new puppy: “Merlin? Oh, then he’s destined for great
things!” And indeed he is exceptionally clever and
capable. He knows all sorts of tricks, is well behaved and impeccably mannered.
This comes in handy, because he comes with us everywhere we possibly can take
him.
Merlin is training to become a hearing dog — or, more precisely, he has already been working as an
assistance dog for some time and is doing a wonderful job. He still has one
successful exam ahead of him before he can officially become an assistance dog.
He is part of every little thing that
happens in our lives, always in the middle of whatever is going on, and, of
course, he has a permanent place in the back of the car, between the children.
kárpótolt minket ezen a téren.
This summer, he crossed Europe with us,
went swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, and we even visited the Forest of Merlin
with him in France — which, by the way, was a bit of a disappointment. From a
forest associated with a wizard, I would have expected more mystery and magic.
But never mind: the sight of the megaliths in Brittany more than made up for
it.
And as for the beard — well, he even grows
one from time to time. I have photographic evidence.
